Confusion over emergency number

Post by GD on Tue 01 Jul 2008, 7:45 pm

NEW figures show that many nine and ten-year-olds in Jersey think that 118 or 911 is the number to call in an emergency.

It has caused major concern for Child Accident Prevention Jersey, which is blaming the rise in American children’s programmes and adverts for directory inquiry service 118118 for children not knowing that 999 is the correct number to dial.

Louise Hamilton, co-ordinator for CAP Jersey, said that they discovered the problem during their yearly Safety in Action Week, which runs until 8 July. ‘When we asked them what number to ring in an emergency, several children in each group said 911 or 118,’ said Mrs Hamilton.

Community fire officer Craig Channing said that there were two emergency numbers which people could call. ‘Jersey adopted 112 alongside the UK’s 999 because of the Island’s proximity to France and the European Union’s campaign to adopt a single emergency number across all 27 EU countries.’

Mr Channing added: ‘At this time the UK have no plans to drop the 999 number and Jersey’s emergency services have taken the position to make 999 the sole number in all our advertising and student education programmes to combat confusion. (from thiisjersey)

Try dialing 911 and see what happens.
