Unlicensed taxi drivers in Guernsey face £2,000

Post by GD on Thu 11 Feb 2010, 9:29 pm

Illegal taxi drivers operating in Guernsey face a fine of up to £2,000, the Environment Department has warned.
It said it has been made aware of individuals operating unlicensed taxis through social-networking sites.
The department said the maximum fine for operating illegal taxis was £2,000 and drivers' insurance policies would be invalidated by charging passengers.
Mike Mauger, president of Guernsey Taxi Owners Federation, backed the warning and said it was about public security.

He said the practice had been going on for a number of years but it was difficult to catch people doing it as to be prosecuted they had to be caught "red-handed".
Mr Mauger said: "Environment are now taking steps to look out and catch them and we're doing all we can to advise them when we see this sort of behaviour going on.
"Times are tough for everybody but I think it's more just opportunists - it's just seemed like a good idea and an easy way to make £5 or £10 running around the place, but they don't think the consequences out."
He added: "With a licensed taxi you know whose car you are getting into." (from BBC)

It the law don't get you the Income tax will....

But what if a group of teens get together and decide that one will be the driver. Meet in town and take two-three trips to get everyone home at the end of the night charging 5 quid per person, covers petrol and inconvenience etc. Would this be caught. Or the bloke in the pub who gives patrons a lift into town on a regular basis at the end of the night for a fiver each.

On both accounts you know who you are getting in the car with and it sounds a good way to cut down the costs.

does this also extend to the volunteer driver who take folks to appointments or go fetch stuff for them?
as someone must pay their expenses for them

surely its just due to the "advertising" on facebook thats illegal, going out and looking for custom, rather than taking a donation towards the fuel from a mate.
