Tackling drug abuse IS important to States
Tackling Jersey's drug and alcohol problem IS important to the States.
That's according to the island's minister for Health and Social Services. Senator Shenton said: "After touring one of the island's drug rehabilitation units, Senator Ben Shenton said drug abuse impacts on social standards and that greater investment in tackling the problem would be money well spent."
"Well funding is a big issue and as a politician we're well aware that people say cut funding here, cut funding there. But we do have a drug and alcohol problem in Jersey and we do have to invest and make sure we improve the situation not only for the drug and alcohol users for themselves but also the children and the families and the people affected by drug and alcohol use."
"Where we are today at Gloucester Lodge we're looking at the programmes that we use, just to make life a little bit better and ease people off drug and alcohol related issues. About a third of the people who come here actually are cured here of their drug problems after the first course. About 80% feel better after going through the courses. We have about 800 heroin users on the Island to me that's quite a large number and I don't think people realise just how bad the problem of drugs is on the island." (from CI Tv)
Its a problem that must be addressed and funding must be provided...
