Re: Deputy Roy Le Herissier
DEPUTY Roy Le Hérissier is celebrating after being re-elected unopposed for a fourth term as St Saviour Deputy for the No 3 district. The 65-year-old, who now lives in St Peter, said that he had mixed feelings about the fact that his election was uncontested. ‘I obviously feel very proud on the one hand and have fought for reform and change in Jersey, but wanted to see more contested elections,’ he said.
‘But, I am very proud and thankful for the support and I can now keep fighting for improvements around Five Oaks and we now have a new Constable, who also has a new direction in various ways which is good for the parish.
‘He is building on the community efforts and it is a fairly small group of people that work in the parish and we have to find ways to get more and more people involved in dealing with the issues of St Saviour. We have allowed developments such as the one behind the parish hall, but know that with Jersey developments we have to be eternally vigilant as there is a big land grab for green fields.’
The Deputy, who first stood in 1999, said that he will need to look at all his various commitments such as his membership of various Scrutiny panels such as the Corporate Services panel, the Health, Social Services, Housing and Social Security panel and the Public Accounts committee now he has been re-elected.
He said that he did not feel that his move to St Peter would affect his role, adding: ‘I did address this in my comments last night [Tuesday] and asked a lot of parishioners about it, but I know that St Saviour has been loyal to me and I hope I have been loyal to it. I think I can still retain my link with the parish and go to relevant meetings, walk the streets and deal with complaints face to face as much as possible. I am always picking up information and keep in touch with what people are thinking.’
He said that he hoped the next three years in the States would not be as divided as the last three and said that it was a time of unprecedented challenges for Members. ‘People got fed up with what has happened in the last three years and we have got to have the kind of leadership that can bring the States together rather than divide it.’
