Branchage Festival Programme: film screenings, live performances, Warp Party

The Branchage Jersey International Film Festival, the biggest cultural event of its kind to hit the Channel Islands, begins at the end of this month. The festival website www.branchagefestival.com is now fully loaded with the entire programme of screenings, parties and seminars, ticket and venue information, and all the latest festival news.

Featuring quirky animations by the illustrators of biannual narrative art magazine LE GUN, the website www.branchagefestival.com will help everyone in the Channel Islands to make a difficult decision: what to see and do over the weekend of 25-28 September.

Opening on Thursday 25 September with a gala screening of multi award-winning MAN ON WIRE at majestic Jersey Opera House, other acclaimed films having their Channel Islands debut at Branchage include A COMPLETE HISTORY OF MY SEXUAL FAILURES, MOUTH TO MOUTH, MY WINNIPEG, HEAVY METAL IN BAGHDAD, ROLLIN’ THROUGH THE DECADES, and TROPA DE ELITE. We’re also thrilled that Branchage will host an exclusive preview screening of British comedian John Shuttleworth’s Jersey set mocumentary SOUTHERN SOFTIES, and UK pre-release screenings of music documentary PATTI SMITH: DREAM OF LIFE, enlightening tantric journey THREE MILES NORTH OF MOLKOM, and British feature SUMMER with an award-winning performance by lead actor Robert Carlyle. A powerful double bill of U.S. documentaries looking at war in the 21st century and how ordinary people can implement change, BEYOND THE CALL and DISARM are both UK premieres.

Unique venues and special events play a key role at Branchage. The screening of Oscar-winning PETER & THE WOLF will feature live accompaniment by the Kings Chamber Orchestra. Classic 1973 horror THE WICKER MAN will be shown at eerie Gorey Castle with a live soundtrack by nu-folksters The Memory Band. The notorious Jersey War Tunnels will host a film created especially for Branchage by award-winning filmmaker Sarah Wood using JERSEY ARCHIVE footage, with a live soundtrack from classical electronica composer Zan Lyons. We return to Gorey Castle for the closing night gala, FAINTHEART, when guests will be greeted by vikings!

Many films will feature pre-screening entertainment: for example, Rough Trade’s Phil Adams will provide a DJ set prior to JOY DIVISION; and Linda Rose Parkes will read a selection of poetry prior to PATTI SMITH: DREAM OF LIFE. There’ll also be numerous events and parties at the festivals centrepiece Spiegeltent: including ROJO & THE TASSLE CLUB PRESENT... LE BORDÉE D’BRANCHAGE, a burlesque cabaret ball featuring a performance by enigmatic singer Paloma Faith; WARP PARTY, with live sets from The Oscillation and Velofax, and a DJ set from Broadcast; WARPVISION, a silent screening in collaboration with Warp Records and Gallery Magazine’s Silent Disco; and an afternoon of free entertainment, music, and poetry readings courtesy of music magazine THE BEAT HAPPENING. Jonny Trunk of London-based RESONANCE FM will also broadcast live from the Spiegeltent on Sunday 28 September.

At www.branchagefestival.com you’ll also find details of all our short films, screening in partnership with guest programmers the UK FILM COUNCIL, BIRDS EYE VIEW, FOURDOCS, LONDON SHORT FILM FESTIVAL, and SOHO RUSHES SHORT FILM FESTIVAL. These will screen at the Old Magistrates Court & Prison Cells, and are free of charge.
